A CLASSIC MYSTERY OF GRAVITY — REIMAGINED

For generations, magicians have been fascinated by one seemingly impossible challenge: to defy gravity.

This piece is a dedication to that enduring pursuit — bringing together three different mysteries of gravity within a single routine: an illusion of weight, impossible balance, and finally, levitation.

Its roots reach deep into magical history, from Robert-Houdin’s pioneering suspension illusions and the great levitations of Maskelyne’s Egyptian Hall, through to illusionist and inventor André Kole and his ingenious Atomic Stockpile — a miniature interpretation of the classic levitating-lady illusion.

Inspired by that wonderful premise, this piece reimagines established principles to take the mystery in a new direction.

No special table or stand. No magnets. No threads. The blocks can be freely handled and shown from all sides, the ring is completely solid, and the pieces can be handled and inspected by the spectator.

THE EFFECT — THREE MYSTERIES. ONE LAW.

The mystery begins with something the spectator doesn’t just see, but actually feels.

Three blocks are stacked together and the spectator asked to lift the stack to experience it’s combined weight. Next they are then asked to lift just one — yet somehow, that single block appears to feel dramatically heavier than all three combined!

From there, the blocks are arranged into a series of increasingly impossible balances, each appearing to challenge their own centre of gravity.

And then, finally, balance gives way to levitation.

The blocks are seen suspended above the table as a solid metal ring is passed over, around and through them — the iconic image of the great stage levitations, now happening only inches away.

All of this can be performed directly on virtually any suitable surface.

AN ARTIFACT OF MYSTERY

A richly detailed Egyptian theme evokes the mysteries of ancient Egypt and its monumental pyramids, while offering a subtle nod to Maskelyne’s Egyptian Hall and its place in the history of magical levitation.

Each block features a richly hued Jarrah eucalyptus inlay, individually engraved with imagery representing three ideas at the heart of the routine:

Knowledge. Balance. Ascension.

More than decoration, these symbols provide a foundation for presentation and storytelling while tying the design directly to the progression of the effect.
